We are a sleep away from potentially the biggest WrestleMania of all time, featuring Cody Rhodes vs Roman Reigns II in the main event.
But before we get there, I want to take you for a ride and discuss how it all went down, from no one saw it coming all the way to “We Want Cody”.
Cody Rhodes vs Roman Reigns II – The Beginning:
Cody Rhodes made his return to WWE after 6 years to face Seth Rollins at WrestleMania 38 after leaving AEW. Rollins who at that time didn’t have any opponent for WrestleMania called to the WWE HQ for a meeting with Mr.McMahon. McMahon told Rollins that he would be going to wrestle an opponent of Mr.McMahon’s choosing once he was in the ring at WrestleMania.
On the day of WrestleMania Night:1, Seth along with the whole world found out that finally, the prodigal son “The American Nightmare” Cody Rhodes has returned to WWE. Cody made a triumphant return to the WWE ring by defeating Seth “Freakin” Rollins.
On WrestleMania Night:2, Roman Reigns stepped into the ring in the main event against Brock Lesnar in a Champion Vs Champion “Winner Take All” Unification match, Roman also won the main event and unified the championship by defeating Brock Lesnar.
Both of them gave stellar performances in their matches and continued rivalry with their WrestleMania opponents throughout the year.
First Collision:
After coming back from the injury Cody Rhodes entered and won the Royal Rumble match for the second year in a row and went on to challenge Roman Reigns for his Undisputed Championship in the main event of WrestleMania.
Both went on the deliver awesome promos on the road to WrestleMania 39. The storyline rolled out to be very different from what we are used to seeing over the years. There was no blood drawn but there were some good verbal promos. One thing that stood out during the promo wars was when Paul Heyman and Cody were face-to-face in the ring and Paul decided to go deep on “The Amercian Nightmare” when he mentioned the fact that Cody was his favorite son but Roman was the son he always wanted.
Then in a promo where Cody and Roman finally went face-to-face Roman decided the lay down his championships in the middle of the ring and asked Cody if he had ever won any of that, hell has he ever competed for any of that?
Finally at WrestleMania when they both collided in the main event and went on to deliver a main event match will surely be remembered in history.
The arsenal of both of these superstars was the best in the world, and we truly witnessed a match that was built with some crazy story.
Unfortunately, Cody was screwed by the bloodline from his Undisputed Match with a clear interference from the Solo before he was ejected from the ringside and came back in disguise the deliver his Samoan spike to Cody and help Roman pick up the win.
Throughout the year there were some rumors that Cody might face Roman at SummerSlam but WWE had some other plans.
Cody Rhodes vs Roman Reigns II – Last Dance:
After, WrestleMania Cody teamed up with Brock Lesnar to take on Roman Reigns and Solo Sikoa in a tag match on Raw after Mania. Where Cody was attacked by Brock leading to an epic rivalry throughout the summer.
Finally on an episode of SmackDown Roman and Cody went face-to-face while Cody and Jey were walking out of the arena after their scheduled matchup. That was the moment when the whole WWE Universe found out that there was still a story left to tell between the two.
Months later Royal Rumble Cody Rhodes won the Rumble match for the second year in a row and let the world know who he was coming after when he pointed towards the Roman sitting in the skybox.
Later on, in the 2 Feb episode of SmackDown Cody decided to step aside from his Road to WrestleMania revealing The Rock as the new challenger for Roman in the main event of WrestleMania XL.
After that moment on SmackDown, The WWE Universe decided to the matter into their own hands when they went wild on Twitter and the whole internet with the hashtag “We Want Cody” trending worldwide for the next few days.
After that spectacular moment, Cody and Roman went face-to-face in Vegas at the WrestleMania Kickoff where Cody decided to change his decision and step up to take the spot he won at Royal Rumble and decided the screw The Rock and challenge Roman Regings in the main event of WrestleMania 40.
After the decision things just started getting worse between The Rock and Cody and The Rock decided to step up for his family and he went on to slap Cody across his face in front of the whole world.
Over the last month, The Rock wreaked havoc on Cody with his attack on a recent episode of SmackDown where he kept his promise of putting Cody’s blood in his weight belt that he had promised to give to his mother after beating him at WrestleMania.
Rhodes then teamed with Rollins to fight against both the Rock and Reigns, and WrestleMania XL: Night 1, if Rhodes and Rollins had won the main event of Night 2 would have been turned into a match with Bloodline banned from the ringside. But unfortunately, Rhodes and Rollins lost the match which then turned the main event of Night 2 into a Bloodline Rules match.
Rhodes defeated Reigns at Night 2 after the help from “Jey Uso, John Cena, Seth Rollins, and The Undertaker” who came out to help Rhodes and took out “Jimmy Uso, Solo Sikoa, and The Rock”.
