With 2025 WWE Royal Rumble PLE just around the corner, WWE has decided to bring back the 90s classic WWE Saturday Night’s Main Event one more. The show is set to feature three championship matches with both Men’s and Women’s World Heavyweight Championship on the line.
Cody Rhodes and Kevin Owens were also scheduled to cross paths one last time before their ladder match at the 2025 WWE Royal Rumble. WWE Saturday Night’s Main Event took place at the Frost Bank Center in San Antonio, Texas. The show was once again built with a retro theme, giving fans a feel of the 90s once again.

Nia Jax challenges Rhea Ripley (c) in a Singles match for the WWE Women’s World Championship at WWE Saturday Night’s Main Event
The show kicked off with the WWE Women’s World Championship on the line, Nia Jax attacked Rhea Ripley with a headbutt before the match even began. A great display of power was on display by both Jax and Ripley from the moment when the match began. The match was highly important for both womens, as the loser would have to win the 2025 Woman Royal Rumble match to get another shot at the championship.
Ripley took Jax to the outside and delivered a cross body from the top of the ring post, to which Jax answered back with her signature Annihilator. After a back-and-forth battle, Ripley hit Jax with her signature Riptide to win the match.
Result: Rhea Ripley (c) def Nia Jax to retain her WWE Women’s World Championship
Ratings: 7 /10
Did you know:
- Rhea Ripley also won her first WWE Woman Royal Rumble match here in San Antonio, Texas as well back in 2023.

Bron Breakker (c) defends his WWE Intercontinental Championship in a Singles match against Sheamus at WWE Saturday Night’s Main Event
In the second match of the night, Sheamus tried to win the one last championship in WWE that he had never held. Sheamus took the fight to Breakker using his raw powers, to which Breakker replied with his own speed and power as both competitors fought outside the ring.
Breakker attacked the ribs of Sheamus — trying to get the breath away from the challenger. Sheamus countered a spear by Breakker with a Brogue Kick, but it was not enough as the champion put his leg on the bottom during the cover. Sheamus tried to fight back into the match but his ribs could not help him much as the champion targeted them throughout the match. Breakker managed to deliver a spear to Sheamus and win the match.

The match was filled with some pretty good spots, both Breakker and Sheamus delivered some really good blows to watch others throughout the match. I think the storyline between Breakker and Sheamus is not over yet.
Result: Bron Breakker (c) def Sheamus to retain his WWE Intercontinental Championship
Ratings: 7.5 /10

- Michael Cole on the commentary desk mentioned that this match is the 10th time when Sheamus has challenged for the WWE Intercontinental Championship in his career.

Cody Rhodes and Kevin Owens set for 2025 WWE Royal Rumble contract signing
WWE Saturday Night’s Main Event then featured the contract signing for the Undisputed WWE Championship ladder match between Cody Rhodes and Kevin Owens at the 2025 WWE Royal Rumble PLE.
The San Antonio’s own Shawn Michaels came down the ring to begin the contract signing. Owens talked about Rhodes quitting WWE 10 years ago, saying that he is the one who deserves all the posters, grand entrance, and pyro.
Michaels then called Owens that he looked jealous which made him even more mad and angry. Both Rhodes and Owens then relinquished their championships to be hung above the ring.

Owens then took a cheap shot at Rhodes and tried to hit Michaels with a Package piledriver, but Rhodes saved him. Michaels then hit Owens with a Sweet Chin Music — saving both Rhodes and himself from a disaster.

Braun Strowman battles Jacob Fatu in a Singles match at WWE Saturday Night’s Main Event
After colliding with each other for a few weeks now on WWE SmackDown, both Braun Strowman and Jacob Fatu finally met one-on-one in a Singles match. Strowman took the fight to Fatu in the early moments of the match before Strowman showed him why he is known as the “Monster among men” here in WWE.
Both Fatu and Strowman began to fight with each other outside the ring, Fatu then got the match in control inside the ring when he cornered Strowman. The referee called off the match as Strowman was unable to continue. Fatu continued his attack after losing the match via DQ.

Nick Aldis then brought the officials and security along with him, trying to stop Fatu from attacking the Strowman — who had no clue about where he was. Strowman’s face could be seen full of blood as Fatu delivered a couple of moonsaults on him. All the referees, backstage crew, and medical staff then came to ringside to stop Fatu — who seemed to be on a rampage.
Fatu delivered three Moonsaults on Strowman before finally leaving the ring. I think WWE has finally got the resident monster to put everyone in the locker room on notice. I wonder what’s going to happen if he enters the 2025 Men’s Royal Rumble match.
Result: Braun Strowman won the match via DQ
Ratings: 7 /10
IShowSpeed is coming to the 2025 WWE Royal Rumble PLE
WWE Saturday Night’s Main Event then featured a video package where IShowSpeed was seen talking to Triple H on video chat. Triple H gave Speed an invitation to be the 2025 WWE Royal Rumble PLE, which he accepted.

Jey Uso challenges Gunther (c) to a Singles match for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship
In the main event of WWE Saturday Night’s Main Event XXXVIII, Gunther defended his WWE World Heavyweight Championship against Jey Uso — who is looking to step out from the shadow of his family and do something on his own.
Jey did everything in his power to keep Gunther down, including a spear that he delivered to the champion — which made everyone think that the match was over before the Champion kicked out at two. Jey then delivered another spear, following up with a Uso Splash to the current champion in the ending moments of the match — but it was still not enough.
Gunther then delivered 2 powerbombs to Jey and ended the match by retaining his WWE World Heavyweight Championship. I loved the match but the ending was not really good. On the other hand, Jey proved Gunther wrong for all the things he said to him during the weekly shows.
Result: Gunther (c) defeated Jey Uso to retain his WWE World Heavyweight Championship via pinfall
Ratings: 9 /10
Did you know:
- So far in his career in WWE, Gunther has been a champion for 80% of that time.

My thoughts on WWE Saturday Night’s Main Event XXXVIII
With just a week away from kicking off the road to WrestleMania 41 set to take place in Las Vegas, Fans once got the opportunity see witness the classic WWE Saturday Night’s Main Event. Compared to last month’s WWE Saturday Night’s Main Event show, WWE used the PLE to improve the storylines heading into the WWE 2025 Royal Rumble PLE.
The show was filled with many surprise appearances from the WWE Hall of Famers, who were in attendance. I really liked both World Heavyweight Championship matches, it seems to me that WWE has already started highlighting the superstars who could be a part of more championship pictures throughout 2025.
The show was solid, even with just four matches on the card, it really looked like it was special. Let me know your thoughts in the comments down below, and I’ll catch you soon.
My Ratings for the show: 8 /10
